'Kanthi Malas' are made of the stems of the Tulsi plant. Traditionally Vaishnavas grow the Tulsi plant in their gardens because the plant is sacred. The Tulsi plant is revered as a personality – a Goddess who manifests as the plant which is why the plant is so potent and therefore held up in high regard. Vaishnavas offer the leaves to Krishna to honor Tulsi Devi.
