DEVARISHI RECORDS

The Fusion of YOUTH CREW Records and the HOUSE OF DEVARISHI spawned a Banger in late 2018!

DVR001: BETTER THAN A THOUSAND 'Value Driven' LP, 2018

Better Than a Thousand was essentially a side project that, like many such projects in the Hardcore Punk scene, eventually took on a life of its own. The group's genesis lay in the creative duo of guitarist/songwriter Graham Land and drummer Ken Olden, a Washington, D.C.-area straight-edge kid who played guitar for the Straight-Edge revival outfit Battery and the decidedly metal Damnation AD. The two of them desired to craft a body of songs that recalled the spirit of the bygone "Youth Crew" era of positive-thinking espousing, fast-paced moving, sing-a-long inducing hardcore. They made a bunch of songs and thought, "who better to sing on this than Ray Cappo?" Cappo had virtually led the genre through it's previous incarnation, fronting Straight-Edge flag wavers Youth of Today, before disbanding the group to devote his life to being a Hare Krishna monk, forming Shelter. Shelter played Hardcore music for a time, but had by that point evolved into something much slicker and more commercial, so Cappo jumped at the chance to revisit his past barking-vocal style. He enthusiastically laid down all of his parts in two days, in a bedroom studio setup. His voice can even be heard getting noticeably hoarse by the end of Just One, Better Than a Thousand's debut album, released in July 1997 through Revelation Records. The group began touring when it could, between its members full-time projects' schedules. They even released a second album, Value Driven, in the late '90s, before quietly dissolving.

LineUp: Ray Cappo / Ken Olden / Jeff Neuman / Graham Land

DVR003: 108 ‚Curse of Instinct' 12", 2020

Formed in 1991 by Vic DiCara (Vraja Kishor dasa) 108 was designed to put Krishna Consciousness in the center of their music. Joined by Rob Fish (Rasaraja dasa, ex singer of Release and Ressurection), Tim Cohen (Trivikrama dasa) and Kate O Eight (Keli Lalita devi dasi) 108 became the pioneers of the so-called Krishna-core movement of the early 90ies along with bands like Shelter, Refuse To Fall and Prema. All bands were under the roof of Equal Vision Records.

108 created a straight-up hardcore with metallic, crushing breaks and angry riffs. The unique 108 sound is intense, melancholic, chaotic, tender, dramatic and earth-shattering at the same time.

108 always had an ‚aggressive‘ approach towards spirituality for they never sugarcoated their understanding of the universal truth. 108 declared war on the ego as an essence for true revolution!

Originally released in 1996, ’Curse of Instinct’ was recorded at Salad Days Studio, engineered by Brian McTernan by then already a household name in the Hardcore Community. The 12“EP is containing three 108 songs, a Bad Brains (‚Coptic Times‘) and a Black Flag (‚The Bars‘) Cover.

Robert Fish: vocals

Vic DiCara: guitars

Tim Cohen: bass

Matt Cross: drums
